New members are sought to help Waimea Community Chorus shower the audiences at Kahilu Theatre  with gold, (musically speaking at least), when the group takes to the stage there in June for its 17th Annual Spring Concert featuring some of Broadway’s most popular tunes originating in musicals of the 1960’s.  It was a particularly fertile period for the genre, according to WCC Artistic Director Barbara Kopra, who has been conducting the prominent Waimea group since 2004.  Many of the shows to hit the New York stages in the 60’s went on to become blockbusters, and to enshrine themselves in the memories of theatre-goers throughout America and the world.

Well-know musicals of that period include “The Sound of Music”, “Fiddler on the Roof”, “Hello Dolly!”, “Sweet Charity”, “Oliver!”, “Mame”, “The Fantasticks”, “Roar of the Greasepaint, Smell of the Crowd”, “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown”, “Camelot” and many more.  The Chorus will present individual selections of favorites from some productions as well as longer medleys from others.

The Chorus most recently fielded an ensemble of 50 voices for their “Silver Screen Christmas” concert and more than 60 voices in last year’s “That 60’s Music Show” which showcased pop music from the same decade.   Miguel Bray, the group’s manager, points out that the composition of the group varies from season to season due to logistics and the schedules of the group’s corps of regulars.   New faces join the group each season, attracted by the community nature of the chorus—auditions are not required---as well as by its reputation for quality shows and for the welcoming camaraderie of its members.  “We’re proud of the fact that our rehearsals and shows are fun for our singers” says Kopra, but she is quick to add that members are expected to take their participation seriously and to attend rehearsals consistently.

The chorus begins its 17th season with registration on Tuesday, January 25th, at 6;45 pm at St. James Episcopal Church in central Waimea.  Rehearsal will follow, with weekly rehearsals every Tuesday at the church, from 7 – 9 pm.  New members may join at any rehearsal until February 8th.  Prospective members are urged to contact WCC at 885-5818 or Miguel a 938-3062 for more information, or to visit Waimea Community Theatre & Chorus on Facebook, or to consult the group’s website at www.waimeacommunitytheatre.org  .
