WAIMEA COMMUNITY CHORUS ASKS
“WHAT’S IN A NAME?”
Names are in focus as Waimea Community Chorus prepares to launch its 19th Spring season which will lead up to its Annual Spring Concert, presently scheduled for June 9 & 10, 2012 at Kahilu Theatre. The show will be called “What’s in a Name?, according to director Barbara Kopra, and is a tribute to songs incorporating names into their song title. The concert will feature a great variety of musical styles and will include for example: Barbara Allen (folk music), Bill Bailey Won't You Please Come Home? (Dixieland), Sweet Baby James (1970's ballad), Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho (spiritual), Once in Love with Amy (soft shoe style), Johnny Angel (50's pop), Sherry (60's rock and roll) along with barbersop renditions of pop songs like Hello Mary Lou and show tunes like Lida Rose from The Music Man.
The show promises to be fun for chorus members as well as the audience, and the group is recruiting new members for the commencement of Spring season on January 24th beginning at 6:45 pm at St. James Episcopal Church in central Waimea. Registration for the season will continue at the regular Tuesday night rehearsals for the first three weeks, until February 7. While no audition is required, prospective singers should be able to commit their Tuesday evenings to the two-hour (7-9 pm) rehearsals on a consistent basis, and of course should be available for the final rehearsals and performances on the week ending in the show dates given above.
Waimea Community Chorus has become a prominent performance group over its 19 year history. A division of Waimea Community Theatre, the group formed in 1994 followed the very successful presentation of “Man of La Mancha” and was originally composed largely of cast members who wanted to continue to sing on a regular basis. Today the group includes individuals aged from teens to 70’s and from as far afield as South Kona and Lower Puna, who regularly commute remarkable distances to participate in the group, known for its congeniality as well as its quality productions. WCC’s most recent holiday concert, entitled “With Music Ring” included a 15-piece orchestra as well as seventy singers, to the delight of large audiences at the two performances. Kopra intends to guide the group to similarly successful shows in June.
Persons interested in joining the chorus should attend the registration/opening rehearsal on the 24th, or contact Miguel Bray, the group’s coordinator at 938-3062. Additional information is available on Facebook by visiting Waimea Community Theatre & Chorus
Tickets for the Spring Concert are tentatively priced at $15 for adults, $13 for seniors and students, and $10 for children 10 and under. They will be bavailable with a $2 “Advance Sale” discount from WCT’s regular ticket outlets, the Waimea General Store and Without Boundaries in Waimea Town, and from Suite Possibilities in Kailua-Kona, approximately two weeks prior to the show.
